Dear Users;

In this tutorial, we explore the use of the seed function to control the randomization process in data collection tools. The seed function sets the starting point for generating random numbers. By using a prime number such as 1019, 1051, 1049, 29, or 41, you can ensure that the same sequence of random values is generated every time — improving consistency and reproducibility.

In our previous tutorial, we demonstrated how to use the randomize function with a value set and how to protect fields to reduce biased respondent selection.

Despite these measures, enumerators may still manipulate the process by closing the case without saving and reopening it repeatedly until a preferred respondent is selected. In this session, we show how the seed function helps address this issue by fixing the randomization sequence based on household ID and the number of eligible members.
