CSpro text viewer has stopped working

Post by melkonyanarman »

Dear all,

I am trying to compare to data entry files, but receiving the following error message: "CSpro text viewer has stopped working".
How can I solve this issue?

Many thanks!

That message appears when a problem occurs in the program, usually as a result of a memory issue not handled properly by the program. If you reboot the machine and you get the same problem, then it means that there is a bug with the Text Viewer program that we would like to fix.

Are you using CSPro version 5, and does your file have Armenian characters in it?

If so, and you don't mind sending the files, I can take a look at why they are causing the problem: gregory.martin@census.gov

In the meantime, you might consider using Notepad++ to view and compare your files: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/

I think the problem is with the parameter passing in regards to a previous file that Text viewer was trying to open. So when text viewer opens it is automatically trying to look for that file especially when invoked by another CSPro tool, such as Batch. If it cannot find the file, it crashes. So the possible workaround is to open text viewer through the start menu then close the program and it should work as normal. I am thinking this will overwrite any file in its memory.

Pierre,

We have noticed a problem with Text Viewer crashing in certain circumstances when invoked by CSPro tools. As you noted, opening Text Viewer directly will clear out the "recent opened file" cache and fix the opening problem. We haven't been able to consistently recreate this problem, however, so we haven't been able to fix it. If you figure out a series of steps that always results in the crash, please let us know!

You can use the CSPro tool Compare Data, or you can use the Compare plugin for Notepad++:

Dear all,

I've followed your example for the dictionaries and it works well ! But I've a problem with the sort data tool.

In fact, I would like to compare results from two different survey with exactly the same IDs. Do we need two compare survey to have the same number of case? And if yes, how can I delete the surplus case ?
When I run the sort data tool, I've an error message as follow : "Sort Completed. Structure errors in resulting file"...

If you know the case id of the surplus case, then you can open the dat file in any viewer (including notepad), look for the case using the case id, and you can identify the line (or lines) representing the two cases. You can then delete the once that are truely surplus. Please keep the original file in case something goes wrong. This definitely works!

You can also delete a case using using CSEntry. Open the data entry app in CSEntry right click on the case ids in the tree on the left and choose "delete". You can use "Find Case" from the edit to search for the case if there are a lot of cases in the data file. This is safer than using a text editor since with a text editor it is possible to accidentally remove part of another case.
